Treating wood outdoors: do you choose stain or oil?

Stain or oil - what exactly is the difference? Many DIY brands use the term ‘oil’ in their product names, simply because not everyone is familiar with the word ‘stain.’ Brands like XyladecorV33 and Woodlover conveniently play on this.

With the real pro brands, on the other hand, such as Sigma and Sikkens, you will only find stain products, because professionals have long added this word to their paint dictionary. What's our short definition?
Our brief definition of stain = a waterproof protection especially for use on exterior wood to extend its life and prevent wood rot and ageing.

How much stain, oil, ... do I need?

The yield of 1L of stain or oil is between 12m² and 15m². Note that it is recommended to apply two to three layers for the best protection.

So ultimately, with 1L you can basically cover around 4 to 5m² in a three-coat system.

Note: the exact consumption may vary from product to product. So always check the technical data sheet for more certainty.

At what intervals should you treat your exterior wood again?

With a transparent exterior stain, you can protect your exterior wood from the sun and rain for an average of 3 years. With an opaque stain it is 5 years on average. However, if your exterior wood is exposed to the sun for hours on end, it will discolour faster than wood left in the shade. Take this into account.

If you use an oil, you will have to go back to work sooner. In fact, we recommend using an oil to maintain your garden furniture, teak or bankirai every year.
