The Japandi trend: stylish, light and warm

Japandi style is the interior design trend par excellence of 2021. In this blog post, we will give you some more information about the colours that go excellently with this smart trend.

Japa-what?

If you look closely, you will see that 'Japandi' is a contraction of Japan and Scandi(navian). The popular living trend therefore combines both interior styles: the minimalism and tranquility from the Far East and the warm Scandinavian homeliness.

Natural and soft

One of the characteristics of the Japandi style is the use of natural, pure and durable materials. Especially light or warm woods and bamboo are key materials for the aesthetic, Simplicity graces the pieces you use as a base. You easily create the Scandinavian cosiness by adding soft materials such as velours, to your interior. Combination is key!

The colours you choose best for your Japandi interior are as simple as the style itself. Natural colours complement natural materials. Think of sand colours, light earth tones and neutral greys, with warm white to balance everything out. RAL 9010 is by far the most popular shade of white, and is also the ideal base shade for the Japandi aesthetic. However, you can also certainly combine RAL 9001 with many natural materials. ‘Transcend’ (PPG1079-4), Sigma's warm, earthy trend colour for 2021, can also be used as a base or secondary colour. The ‘Trust’ colour palette from Sikkens' Color Futures 2021 trend colours is full of colours that are totally Japandi, with nature in names like ‘Steady Pebble’ and ‘Worthy Clay’. 

For the interior accents, you can choose slightly darker colours, such as aubergine, dark brown, matt black or even blue. As long as the whole thing still looks calm, natural and minimalist, you'll be fine! Here too, the ideal colours can be found in Sikkens' ‘Trust’ palette, for example ‘Bold Soil’ and ‘Daring Sienna’. Among Sigma's trend colours for 2021, you will also find ‘Enchanting Eggplant’ (PPG13-07) and ‘Starless Sky’ (PPG0995-7), which are perfect accent colours for your Japandi interior.
