What is a grey stain?
Grey stain is a protective wood finish that preserves the visibility of the wood grain while protecting the wood from moisture, UV rays and dirt. But within grey stain products, you actually have two main groups: a transparent grey stain and an opaque grey stain. In appearance, these differ hard from each other.
1. A transparent grey stain
Transparent grey stain leaves the structure and grain of the wood clearly visible, while adding a subtle shade of grey. This creates a natural and weathered look, ideal for wood furniture, flooring, pallet wood and siding.
Our favourite: Woodprotect 2-in-1 Classic Satin, this translucent stain is available in any PPG color if you add the letter W to the color code. Feel free to check out some options among these Neutral Sigma colors.
Our favourite available in grey tones
2. An opaque grey stain
An opaque grey stain offers a more intense shade of gray and provides an even finish where the wood grain is less visible. This type of stain is perfect when you want a sleek and modern result and the wood needs extra protection from weathering. The most popular shade of grey for opaque stains is anthracite grey, also known as RAL 7016.

What is the difference between grey stain and grey wash stain?
Although both finishes give wood a grey hue, there are differences:
- Grey stain with an opaque finish colors the wood intensely and protects your surface from moisture and UV rays. There is no such thing as a grown wash stain look with opaque stains, because the color is too opaque!
- Grey wash stain is a transparent grey stain and gives a lighter, translucent haze over the wood, giving it a more weathered/grey wash stain look.
Both options are suitable for various applications, depending on the desired look.
What should you look for when buying grey wash stain?
When choosing grey stain, it is important to consider:
- Indoor or outdoor application: Choose a water-based stain if you want to stain wooden beams or furniture indoors, outdoors you can go with both water-based and solvent-based stains.
- Transparent or opaque: Decide whether you want a natural, weathered look or rather go for a more opaque, clean finish.
- Type of wood: Depending on your type of wood, the gray stain may look different. Not every wood absorbs stain the same way, so we recommend testing the anthracite stain, grey stain or grey wash stain on a small piece first. Or check out our stain guide that recommends a suitable stain for each type of wood.
Grey wash stain a good choice?
Grey stain is an excellent choice if you want to create a stylish and timeless look. It fits perfectly in both modern and country interiors and is also suitable for outdoor applications such as fences and gazebos. Grey has many different shades, from light to dark. If you choose a light gray stain, you're going to need less maintenance than if you choose a dark grey stain or anthracite stain. Keep that in mind when buying your new grey stain.

Which is better: grey stain or grey lacquer paint?
Grey stain and grey lacquer each have their own advantages:
- Grey stain penetrates the wood and preserves its natural structure.
- Grey lacquer paint forms a layer on the wood and offers a smooth, capped finish with scratch resistant.
For those who want a natural look with visible wood grains, gray stain is the better choice. If you want a fully opaque and smooth finish, lacquer paint is more appropriate. But for gazebos, garden furniture or fences, we always recommend a stain because the wood can still breathe. A lacquer paint in color grey can be applied to windows and doors, for example, because these are dimensionally stable systems.
