Paint with the EU Ecolabel
The EU Ecolabel in a nutshell:
- European label for ecological products.
- Guarantees environmentally friendly production.
- Implemented by the European Commission and independently verified.
What is the EU Ecolabel?
What does it guarantee?
The EU Ecolabel is an environmental label, which means it is only awarded to products that have a low(er) impact on the environment. When it comes to paints and varnishes, this implies a prohibition of dangerous substances.
Moreover, the label establishes criteria regarding volatile organic substances (VOS), which can be emitted by building materials and possibly inhaled. That includes very strict criteria for the presence of formaldehyde, a toxic conservatory and binding agent that can cause irritation to the eye and the upper respiratory passages. It also defines a norm for the presence of titanium dioxide (the pigment that gives paint its white colour) and heavy metals. For residues of pesticides, however, no criteria have been established.
For odour nuisance, too, there are no specific criteria attached to the label. Neither are there maximal emission norms for production that have to be taken into account. All products carrying the EU Ecolabel are tested for their effectiveness. Their packaging should display clear information regarding usage, dosage and possible hazards of the product. The label uses very high quality standards, for example regarding scrub resistance, coverage and waterproofing.
