Which stain for my type of wood?

How do you choose an oil or stain suitable for your type of wood? In this paint guide, we help you on your way so you can find the best wood protection for douglas, teak and bankirai surfaces, among others.

The most important thing to remember: there are oils and stains for softwood and hardwood. We explain which type of wood belongs to which group so that you immediately know which stain to use. Immerse yourself now and become an expert in wood protection with stain or oil! 👇

Stain for softwood

Pine, fir and Douglas fir are softwood species. Spruce, previously known as scaffolding wood, can also be included in the softwood category. Because softwood is not strong enough to be used in dimensionally stable constructions (windows, doors), you will almost always see softwood such as Douglas fir in non dimensionally stable constructions such as wooden fencing, cladding or garden sheds.

So are you looking for a stain to breathe new life into these kinds of garden projects in pine, fir, spruce or Douglas fir? Then go for Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus. You can get this stain for softwood in some standard wood tones. But a big advantage: you can also specify other colour codes for a unique look. With this stain, you protect the surface from rain, preventing wood rot. And because a little colour pigment goes into the stain, your softwood will not grey.

Looking specifically for Douglas stain?

If you have resolutely chosen a Douglas garden fence or gazebo because you love the Douglas colour, then you might want to preserve the Douglas wood colour as much as possible. Well, then it's handy not to wait too long to stain your douglas wood, otherwise your douglas wood will be completely greyed out within a few months. We recommend opting for Xyladecor Tuinhuis stain in the Douglas fir colour, as this best imitates the colour of your Douglas fir and prevents your wood from greying.

However, if you want to stain Douglas fir in a completely different wood colour, you can choose Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus. However, if you want to stain your Douglas fir blue, grey or green with an opaque stain, Xyladecor Tuinhuis Color is sure to please. You can see the available colours on the product page.

Stain scaffolding wood with this product

You can easily stain spruce or scaffolding wood with Woodlover Steigerhout. A product loved by numerous painthusiasts.

But also professionals love to stain scaffolding wood to prevent wood rot. A topper that often rolls over the counter here is Sikkens Cetol Novatech. This transparent stain is particularly suitable for cedar and softwood such as spruce (scaffolding wood) and pine in non dimensionally stable constructions. The most frequently chosen colours for this Cetol Novatech scaffolding wood stain are 077 pine or the greige colour G1.06.55.T

Stain for hardwood

When we talk about hardwood, we are talking about wood derived from deciduous trees such as padouk or oak. Both wood species are used differently. Oak, for example, serves for parquet, customisation or furniture. Padouk rather for cladding. So when choosing a stain for hardwood, your choice will depend not only on the type of hardwood, but also on its application.

For general treatment of hardwood found in non dimensionally stable structures such as cladding or garden fencing, use Sigma WoodProtect 2in1 Classic Satin in a three-layer system.

For dimensionally stable constructions such as windows and doors in a hardwood species, opt for Sigma Woodprotect Ultra Satin.

Oak stain or varnish

You won't often come across oak in outdoor applications. Inside, on the other hand, there are decorative doors or tables. To protect oak from knocking over water, you can use a stain with moisture-regulating properties. But is there such a thing as oak stain?

Well, in principle, indoors you can protect your oak from water and preserve its appearance with a clear stain, but in theory a matt varnish such as Sigma Varnish Ultra Matt is more commonly chosen, as it is also resistant to scratches and will not yellow.

However, do you want to stain your oak because you want to give a change of colour to your oak surface? Then you can also get started with Sikkens Cetol Novatech, in which case you have to specify a colour on the product page. The wood structure and grain will remain visible, ensuring a natural look.

Oil or stain for tropical wood types

Tropical or exotic woods such as teak, bankirai, merbau and meranti are also often classified separately. They are actually all hard woods, but often have a specific application such as for garden furniture or terrace boards.

A stain suitable for virtually all tropical woods, both indoors and outdoors, is Jotun Benar UVR. A real winner! But be sure to check out our specific stains suitable for your type of tropical wood.

Which stain can be used on teak?

Teak is often used for garden furniture and is a very strong wood. Here, mould and wood rot rarely occur. For the most natural finish, we tend to reach for Xyladecor tuinmeubelolie in the colour Teak. This will nourish your wood and it will age more slowly. Note: with an oil, it is best to plan your maintenance every year by applying 1 extra coat.

Is that too much work for you? Then use Xyladecor Tuinmeubelbeits Natuurlijk Effect Teak. This stain gives your wood 3 years of optimum protection against all weather conditions and gives your furniture a matt, natural teak effect.

Bangkirai wood is often chosen to be used in decking. But how to treat bankirai? With this application in mind, you can opt for a decking oil in colour Bankirai. This Xyladecor patio oil offers good protection against UV rays and does not flake off.

Do you prefer a treated Bankirai terrace with an anti-slip feature to reduce the risk of slipping? Then you'd better go for Xyladecor Terrasbeits Antislip. Although this is not available in a Bankirai colour, it is available in anthracite and teak. You can also choose natural (colourless), although we advise against it.

This is because colourless stains offer no protection against UV rays, which will cause your Bankirai terrace to age anyway. Don't mind this, though? Then you can still treat your bankirai with this colourless stain, as your deck will be spared from all the ailments brought on by rain and frost.
