Stain for softwood
Pine, fir and Douglas fir are softwood species. Spruce, previously known as scaffolding wood, can also be included in the softwood category. Because softwood is not strong enough to be used in dimensionally stable constructions (windows, doors), you will almost always see softwood such as Douglas fir in non dimensionally stable constructions such as wooden fencing, cladding or garden sheds.
So are you looking for a stain to breathe new life into these kinds of garden projects in pine, fir, spruce or Douglas fir? Then go for Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus. You can get this stain for softwood in some standard wood tones. But a big advantage: you can also specify other colour codes for a unique look. With this stain, you protect the surface from rain, preventing wood rot. And because a little colour pigment goes into the stain, your softwood will not grey.
Stain for hardwood
When we talk about hardwood, we are talking about wood derived from deciduous trees such as padouk or oak. Both wood species are used differently. Oak, for example, serves for parquet, customisation or furniture. Padouk rather for cladding. So when choosing a stain for hardwood, your choice will depend not only on the type of hardwood, but also on its application.
For general treatment of hardwood found in non dimensionally stable structures such as cladding or garden fencing, use Sigma WoodProtect 2in1 Classic Satin in a three-layer system.
For dimensionally stable constructions such as windows and doors in a hardwood species, opt for Sigma Woodprotect Ultra Satin.
Oil or stain for tropical wood types
Tropical or exotic woods such as teak, bankirai, merbau and meranti are also often classified separately. They are actually all hard woods, but often have a specific application such as for garden furniture or terrace boards.
A stain suitable for virtually all tropical woods, both indoors and outdoors, is Jotun Benar UVR. A real winner! But be sure to check out our specific stains suitable for your type of tropical wood.
