How to stain wood

Staining wood: what is it exactly and how do you do it? You may well ask yourself these questions when faced with a staining job:

  • what is the best way to apply stain?
  • should I degrease the wood before staining?
  • is sanding before staining necessary?
  • should I apply 1 or 2 coats of the stain?

Here are the answers to your questions, broken down into five handy how-to guides 👇

Wood staining

What does staining mean? Not everyone is familiar with the term. When you stain wood, you are going to apply a transparent or opaque protective coating to it. By doing so, you protect the wood outside from the weather, but you can also give it a nice colour.

So what is the difference between painting and staining? Stain is a product designed specifically for wood. It allows the wood to breathe, but at the same time protects it from moisture. In addition, with a stain you will always be able to see the wood structure. Paint (or lacquer for wood), on the other hand, puts a completely closed layer on the wood and hides the wood structure.

How do you stain? Generally, after the necessary preparation work, you will apply stain with a brush in the direction of the wood grain. How to proceed specifically to paint a summerhouse, garden furniture and other outdoor wood? Read the step-by-step plans below!
