What is a black stain?

You have two types of black stain: a transparent black stain or an opaque one. But both types protect your wood from all kinds of weather conditions and therefore extend the life of your wood.

1. A transparent black stain

This retains the natural look and wood structure the most. The most popular black stain colour in transparent finish is the wood colour ebony.

2. An opaque black stain

Here you still have the feel of wood, but already quite less than with a transparent stain. The wood is coloured even more because you choose an opaque black stain. When it comes to opaque black stains, there are many variants. For example, in many cases you can fill in a mixed colour such as the most popular black shade RAL 9005.

But at DIY brands such as XyladecorV33 and Woodlover, you can also find a lot of other awesome black stain colours such as charcoal.

What should you look out for when buying black stain?

When you want to purchase a black stain, it is important to know that by doing so, you are making a fairly final decision. Once applied, it is in fact difficult to go back to a lighter wood colour. Do you still want to retain flexibility? Then a transparent black stain is a good choice, as you can apply further opaque stain layers over it later.

We would also like to point out that black stain absorbs more sunlight than other stain colours. For this reason, you are going to have to reapply a black stain a little faster, so the signs of the sun will be less visible.

Black stain a good choice?

Absolutely! You'll protect your wood from moisture and UV rays, thus preserving its quality. Besides, black is an excellent choice because it makes your surface look elegant and modern. The only downside: black stain suffers from the sun more quickly than, say, white stain or grey stain. This is simply due to the fact that the colour black absorbs more sun. For this reason, you will have to schedule maintenance a little sooner with a black stain.

Which is better black stain or black lacquer paint?

If you have non dimensionally stable wood outdoors such as a gazebo, garden furniture, a fence, terrace, ... then there is no other choice but to opt for a black stain. This is the best way to protect your non dimensionally stable wood.

However, do you want to give your wooden windows or doors the black colour? Then you have two options: Either choose a black stain. This is a good choice if your wood hasn't been stained yet. But choosing black lacquer paint is also an option here. If you choose black enamel paint, your surface will be sealed and you will get a tight paint result. The wood structure is no longer visible with this second option, so it is up to you to choose which finish you prefer.
