How to: paint the bathroom

Which paint do I need? Can I use paint to prevent mildew in my bathroom? Here we give you all the answers and plenty of tips. Let's start with a step-by-step plan. Below you can find all the steps to paint your bathroom and a number of products you can use.

Step 1: preparation

Step 2: apply primer

The first part of good preparation is to clean and degrease the wall properly. If necessary, you can then smooth away any blemishes in the wall. After that, you can sand and dust everything and clean the wall again. When you've done all that, you'll have a good, well-prepared surface to work with. This is essential if you want the paint to adhere well.

A well-prepared wall can then be further prepared with a layer of primer. If the bathroom has been painted before, you don't need to apply a new layer of primer now.

Continue to step 3. You'll find it underneath our product suggestions.

Step 3: paint

Now it is time for the finish! It is best to apply two coats of regular wall paint or water-based lacquer. Below you can read more about the different paints you can use in your bathroom.

In a well-ventilated bathroom

First, you need to know if your bathroom is actually ventilated of course, but how do you know that? Does condensation form on your mirrors after showering and not disappear immediately? This means that the moisture cannot evaporate as quickly. In that case, it is best to use appropriate paint (see next section). Is there no condensation or is it gone within a few seconds? Then it is usually no problem to use regular wall paint. We do recommend, however, that you don't use a matt or extra-matt paint, but rather a velvet matt or satin paint, as these are more resistant to moisture. with matt paint you often see stripes appearing due to condensation.

In a humid bathroom, with or without mildew

Do you have a lot of trouble with condensation, which lingers for a long time? Then it is best to adjust your paint accordingly. We recommend going for an adapted bathroom paint, water-based lacquer or facade paint. Other examples of paints that can be used in damp rooms are Sigma Pearl Clean Matt and Sigmaresist Fungi Matt. The latter also helps to prevent mildew.

For bathroom tiles

Remember that you have to go through the same steps as for your walls (see above). If your tiles have not been painted before, you should use an appropriate adhesive primer. After that, you can finish with a water-based lacquer paint in the desired gloss level.
