Hammered paint
Hammered paint

Looking to buy hammered paint? Hammerite offers specially developed paints with a hammered effect, designed specifically for metal surfaces. Available in both spray cans and traditional paint tins. The choice is yours!

What does the hammered effect look like?

Hammer finish paint creates a look similar to standard metal paint, but with a twist. The surface appears as if it's been lightly hammered, creating a textured, crackled pattern. Don't worry, the cracks aren't real; they just mimic the look while still offering full protection. In fact, the finish resembles a subtle collection of rust particles. Ideal for preserving a rugged aesthetic while shielding the surface from rust, moisture, and scratches.

What are the benefits of hammer finish paint?

  • Perfect for surfaces that aren’t smooth or even
  • No primer required, not even on rusty areas
  • Stops rust in its tracks and protects for up to 8 years
  • Water-repellent and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use
  • Helps hide surface imperfections thanks to its textured finish

Which colours are available in Hammerite hammered paint?

Hammerite’s hammer finish paint is available in a reddish-brown tone that closely resembles rust. Ideal for giving metal a weathered corten steel appearance. Real corten steel can be expensive, but with this colour, you can replicate the look affordably in your garden or outdoor space.

Other popular colours include black, white, and dark grey. Want something different? Check out the full product range for more colour options and find a finish that stands out.

Good to know: most colours are available in convenient 250ml tins. Not sure which shade to pick? Start small before committing to a 750ml or 2.5L tin. A 250ml tin covers around 2–3 m² in a single coat. Two coats are usually recommended, expect to cover approximately 1.5 m² with two layers.

Choosing between hammered spray can or a paint tin?

  • Spray: If you're dealing with a tricky surface where a brush just won't reach, we recommend using the hammer finish spray paint.
  • Paint tin: However, if you're painting a surface that's accessible with a roller or brush, the paint tin offers better control for even application, especially for DIY’ers.

Want the best of both? Hammered paint from the tin can also be used with a spray gun for more flexible application.

How to apply hammer finish paint (tin version)

This bref step-by-step guide applies to unpainted ferrous metals like steel or iron. If you're working with non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, zinc, or galvanised steel, check the product’s technical info under the “Documents” tab first.

Preparation

  1. Remove loose rust with a wire brush or sandpaper
  2. Clean dust and grease using Hammerite Metal Degreaser

Application

  1. Stir the paint thoroughly before use
  2. Test the paint on a small area first and let it dry for 1–2 hours. If there’s no reaction, you’re good to go
  3. Apply the first coat evenly
  4. After about 4 hours, apply a second coat. Only then will your surface be fully protected from rust

Cleaning

  1. Spilled some paint or need to clean your brushes? Use Hammerite Thinner & Brush Cleaner only
